Relationship, Marriage and Family Rules

In their eagerness to build a relationship families often neglect to consider the ground rules of their relationship. One tendency is to overestimate the extent of mutual understanding and agreement on the rules and goals of their marriage.

There are many collaborative tasks required in families which demand some kind of ground rules enabling the smooth running of the organization. Families develop and are governed by certain rules which, for them, become  the norm of family life. Although the rules may or may not be overtly stated, they are understood by all family members, they determine the pattern of behavior between them. Happy and successful families adopt rules which are realistic and helpful, while dysfunctional families follow inadequate rules.

The couple share similar backgrounds, values and beliefs. They have  discussed and agreed on a common set of rules. The rules are periodically reviewed and updated.
