Water is the most vital thing we put into our bodies. See why!

Water

Water is the most vital thing we put into our bodies. It replenishes, regulates, cools, warms, heals – but most importantly, it keeps us alive. If you aren’t sure of the perks that come with being hydrated, don’t worry, we’re going to make it crystal clear! Here are 7 benefits of drinking water:

1. Can aid in weight loss – One can of soft drink averages at about 150 calories. If you are drinking one can each day (many people drink more than this!), that equates to an additional 1,050 calories per week and 4,500 calories per month. By choosing water over a soft drink, alcohol, coffee, or juice, you eliminate those extra calories and sugar intake and replace it with the thing your body needs most. AKA a small change that can yield big results!

2. Helps you avoid muscle fatigue and maximize physical performance – When your body is working hard, your internal temperature rises and causes you to sweat and lose more water. The more we lose, the more our body struggles to function. However, if you ensure you are well hydrated while playing sport or engaging in physical activity, you help your body maintain its strength and perform at peak.

3. Regulates your body’s temperature – Water is stored within the body. When you are hot, it surfaces and evaporates, cooling your skin. Without adequate hydration, your body can be more prone to heat stress.

4. Promotes healthy kidneys – The kidneys main function is to filter through your blood and extract harmful substances while maintaining your body’s necessary fluid and electrolyte balance. Drinking enough water helps keep your blood diluted and protect against kidney stones and other infections.

5. Transports nutrients to all parts of the body – Water makes up a large portion of blood. When your body absorbs nutrients and minerals, they are dissolved in water and transported to the different areas of your body that need them.

6. Improves brain function and keeps you happy – Studies have shown that even mild dehydration can negatively affect mood, concentration, headaches, memory, and overall fatigue. Drinking an adequate amount of water is essential in maintaining brain functionality and boosting performance.

7. Regulates bowel movements – Water helps flush your system. If you are dehydrated, the colon extracts water from the stool to help maintain adequate levels of hydration which results in constipation.

Aside from health benefits, water is also readily available, free, and safe (in most places!). It’s the perfect beverage and, if consumed appropriately, can only improve your body’s functions. While it is rare, it is possible to drink too much water. It’s recommended for women to drink approximately 2.1 liters per day and men to drink 2.6. However, it’s important to remember that these are guidelines – listen to your body and recognize that if you’re engaging in physical activity or it’s particularly hot outside, you should drink more.
