Universities in Kenya Offering Bioinformatics Courses
There are three universities currently offering Bioinformatics courses in Kenya:

  • JKUAT
  • UON
  • PU

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology

MSc. Molecular Biology & Bioinformatics

The program will provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge of molecular biology. In addition, students will acquire practical and theoretical understanding of biological data, statistical, numerical, and computer skills they need to undertake/exploit Bioinformatics. It is worth over 300k for two years.

Admission Requirements
1.1    The common regulations for all Masters degrees in the University shall apply
1.2     The general regulations for all Masters degrees in the Faculty of Science shall  apply
1.3     The following shall be eligible for registration for the Master of Science degree in Molecular Biology and Bionformatics;

(i)  A holder of at least a second class honours (Upper Division) degree from JKUAT  or any other university recognized  by JKUAT Senate, having studied Biological sciences, Computer Science, Mathematics/Statistics. Physical Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine, Dental sciences and Agriculture may also be accepted to the programme.
(ii)  A holder of a degree accepted as equivalent to one of the degrees mentioned in (i) above from a recognized University.

1.4     Candidates without a background in computer science and programming will be required to do the following courses:

(i)   ICS 2174    Introduction to Computer Science
(ii)  ICS 2175    Computer Programming I

University of Nairobi

M.Sc. Bioinformatics- 2 Years

The MSc. in Bioinformatics shall consist of a total of at least 20-course units each of at least 60 hours. The course is worth about over 100 for one semester.

Of the 20 units required to complete the degree program, the candidate shall take 10 core units in the first year.  In the second year, 6 units would be cluster elective course units in the area of specialty and a compulsory research project equivalent to 4 course units, which must be within the specialized course areas.

The course shall be covered in a minimum of 10 semesters of 15 weeks each.

A student shall be allowed to register and take a minimum of 3 units and a maximum of 6 units in a semester.

Ph.D. in Bioinformatics- 3 years

  1. Common regulations for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.) degree at the University of Nairobi shall apply.
  2. Holders of Master of Science degree in Biological and Physical Sciences, Bioinformatics, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dentistry of the University of Nairobi.
  3. Holders of Master of Science degree in Biological and Physical Sciences, Bioinformatics, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry or equivalent qualification from a University recognized by Senate.
  4. Candidates will be required to draw and submit a detailed Doctoral research proposal in the prescribed manner at the time of applying for admission.

Pwani University

As much as there are students doing an MSc in Bioinformatics, there is no information on the universities website the same except the EANBIT project website.

However, there is a course ongoing worth 150K per year for two years with course work having two semesters.
