Understanding Premature Ejaculation

When a man ejaculates, he expulses semen from his body. When this happens sooner than was expected during penetration - by either the man or their partner - then this is known as premature ejaculation. It is also sometimes referred to as early ejaculation, premature climax, and/or rapid ejaculation.

Experiencing premature ejaculation can be frustrating for both parties, especially where it makes the act of having sex much less enjoyable and goes as far as negatively impacting the relationship. Where it occurs regularly and is causing problems, you may want to look into getting help for the condition.

What causes premature ejaculation

Although the cause of premature ejaculation is not exactly known, it is believed that serotonin plays a considerable role. This substance occurs naturally in the body and is produced by nerves. If there is a great amount of serotonin in the body then it will take much longer for a man to ejaculate than if there was a small amount present.

In addition to physical causes, there are also a number of psychological conditions that may also cause premature ejaculation. These include lacking in confidence, feeling guilty, having relationship problems, suffering from depression, feeling stressed, having unrealistic expectations, and being sexually repressed. By taking care of yourself and your emotions, it can help to combat the effects of premature ejaculation.

Premature ejaculation treatments

The main ways of treating premature ejaculation are through medications, behavioral treatment, and/or psychological treatment. It is helpful to speak with a health care professional in order to determine what type of treatment is best for your particular case.

With the help of a psychiatrist or counselor, you may be able to treat the psychological causes of premature ejaculation by talking through your emotions and feelings. When done with a partner as part of a couple’s counseling program, it can actually work to bring them closer together.

Using certain behaviors and techniques to delay ejaculation is called behavioral therapy - doing these can help to build up a tolerance. This way you can train your body to not ejaculate prematurely and last longer so that both yourself and your partner can enjoy having sex with one another. Some of the techniques that can be adopted here include the stop-and-start method and the squeeze method.

There are a number of oral medications, and creams, and ointments that all work to help men last longer during penetrative intercourse. There are some prescription drugs, such as those that are used for treating depression do work in delaying ejaculation, although these need to be prescribed to an individual and cannot be purchased over the counter for the purpose of treating erectile dysfunction.

Using either one or a combination of these treatments will help between 95 percent of men overcome their premature ejaculation issue. That being said, there is no guaranteed way to recover from the condition, although becoming more relaxed where sex is involved may help you.
