Amref International University (AMIU): Courses and Fees Structure

This is a list of all courses offered at Amref International University and their fee structure as of 2021. The institution was established in 2017 as a premier Pan African University of health sciences. It is owned by Amref Health Africa; a leading health development organization headquartered in Nairobi. The university’s main campus is located along Lang’ata Road, opposite Wilson Airport.

a) Amref International University Undergraduate Courses

1. BSc Midwifery and Reproductive Health (in-service) upgrading

Entry Requirements

  • An aggregate of grade C in KCSE or Division II in the KCE or equivalent  with a C in Biology or Biological Studies
  • Diploma in Nursing KRN, KRM or KRCHN or it’s equivalent from a recognized institution and a minimum of two (2) years post-diploma working experience

Duration: 3 years

Total Fees: Ksh 460,000

2. BSc Midwifery and Reproductive Health (Fresh or direct entry)

Entry Requirements

  • KCSE aggregate of a grade of  C+ or equivalent with English or Kiswahili C+, Mathematics or Physics/Physical sciences C+, Chemistry C+, Biology/Biological sciences C+

Duration: 4 years

Total Fees: Ks 710,000

3. BSc Nursing (fresh or direct entry)

Entry Requirements

  • KCSE aggregate of a grade of C+ or equivalent with English or Kiswahili C+, Mathematics or Physics/Physical sciences C+, Chemistry C+, Biology/Biological sciences C+

Duration: 4 years; three trimesters per year.

First Year Fees

  • 1st Trimester – Ksh 88,200
  • 2nd Trimester – Ksh 106, 700
  • 3rd Trimester –  Ksh 106, 700

4. BSc Nursing Upgrading (in-service)

Entry Requirements

  • All cadres of diploma nurses i.e. nurses who are either KRN, KRCHN, KRM or KRPN from a recognized institution
  • A valid Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) License
  • A Minimum of 2 years working experience in a relevant setting
  • A mean grade of C plain or Division II in O-levels with
  • A pass or C plain in English or Kiswahili.

Duration: 3 years; three trimesters per year.

  • 2nd Trimester – Ksh 63, 700

5. BSc Physiotherapy

Entry Requirements

  • KCSE aggregate of the grade of  C+ or equivalent with English or Kiswahili C+, Mathematics or Physics/Physical sciences C+, Chemistry C+, Biology/Biological sciences C+
  • Upgrading: diploma or higher diploma in physiotherapy from an accredited institution.

Duration: 4 years for entry-level and 2-3 years (6-9) trimesters) for post-diploma physiotherapy students. The course has three trimesters per year.

6. BSc in Community Health Practice

Entry Requirements

  • KCSE (or equivalent) Certificate with a minimum aggregate of C+, minimum of C in Biology and Chemistry, minimum C in English/Kiswahili and Mathematics/Physics. 
  • KACE with a minimum of two principal passes, including Biology and subsidiary passes in Chemistry, Mathematics/Physics.
  • Diploma (with a mean grade of C) in Public Health, Environmental Health, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Community Health, Human Nutrition;
  • The equivalent or higher National Diploma (HND) in Public Health, Environmental Health, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Community Health, Human Nutrition or the equivalent of any of these qualifications from an institution recognised by the University Senate.

Duration: 4 years

7. BSc in Health Systems Management and Development

Entry Requirements

  • KCSE (or equivalent) Certificate with a minimum aggregate of C+, minimum of C in Biology and Chemistry,
    Minimum of C in English/Kiswahili and Mathematics/Physics (or equivalent) certificate with C+ for Biology and Chemistry;
  •  KACE with a minimum of two principal passes including Biology and subsidiary passes in Chemistry, Mathematics/Physics;
  • Diploma (with a mean grade C) in Public Administration, Business Administration/Management, Public Health, Environmental Health, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Community Health, Human Nutrition or the equivalent;
  • Higher National Diploma (HND) in Public Administration, Business Administration/Management, Public Health, Environmental Health, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Community Health, Human Nutrition, or the equivalent of any of these qualifications from an Institution recognised by the University Senate plus a KCSE mean grade C.

Entry Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in medical/ health-related first-degree course – Upper second class or lower second with 2-year post-degree

2. Masters in Public Health

Entry Requirements

  • A basic degree relevant to the applicant’s area of specialization, including Biological, Social and Health Sciences or other closely allied disciplines
  • Upper Second class honours and above in relevant discipline or its equivalent from a university recognised by Amref International University Senate
  • At least one-year working experience

This is Programme is offered in Partnership with Chiromo Mental Health Hospital.

Entry Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in clinical psychology, counselling psychology, psychiatry, psychiatric nursing, or any other related degree from an accredited university.

2. Higher Diploma Critical Care Nursing 

Entry Requirements

  • A Registered nurse (BScN/, BN/, KRN, KRN/M, KRCHN, KRN-Mental Health)  with two years of clinical work experience and in possession of a  valid nursing practice license

3. Higher Diploma in Community Health

Entry Requirements

  • Diploma in Community Health recognised by AMIU with at least one-year working experience or
  • Health-related Diploma or equivalent qualifications recognised by AMIU with at least one-year working experience or
  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university

4. Higher Diploma in Comprehensive Reproductive Health

Entry Requirements

  • Be health worker: nurse, midwife or clinical officer

5. Diploma in Nursing – upgrading Enrolled Nurse midwives (EN/M) to KRCHN

Entry Requirements

  • Be a Kenya Enrolled Community Health Nurse (KECHN)

8. Diploma in Community Health Practice (Basic)

Entry Requirements

  • KCSE Mean Grade: Minimum C Minus (or its equivalent) with a minimum grade of C minus in English/ Kiswahili and a minimum grade of C minus in one (1) of the following subjects: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Agriculture and Home ScienceOR
  • Certificate Pass in Community/ Public/ Community/ Environmental health/ Development or health-related courses from institutions approved by AMIU Senate

Entry Requirements

  • Trained physiotherapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, nurses, and others who have practising certificates.

2. School Leaver’s Career Guidance & Campus Life Preparation Training

This course prepares school leavers aspiring to join post-secondary and various training institutions to be knowledgeable, competent and ethical in their career development and future choices.

3. Household Air Quality Management (To Improve Health & Protect the Environment)

This course targets health workers such as Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs), Public Health Officers/Environmental Health Officers, (EHOs), Health Promotion Officers and other professionals who are working in the Energy and Environment sectors such as Architects, Engineers and Energy officers involved in green projects within the African region.

Duration:  1 Week

4. Human Resource for Health Preparation for Global Opportunities

This course is designed to equip health workers with knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to provide quality health care locally, regionally as well as globally. Participants will gain competencies in managing health patients/clients including conditions and issues affecting the aged persons, those with terminal illnesses and special dietary needs. Participants will be thoroughly prepared on immigration requirements and coached for professional entry examinations.

5. Health Communication and Journalism

The aim of the course is to enhance knowledge, build skills and nurture competencies of journalists, Public Relations Officers and health managers on all aspects related to health reporting.

Duration: 4 Weeks (7 days Face to Face and 21 days Fieldwork)

6. Regional Smart Survey Manager Level Training

This training is intended for staff or persons involved in nutrition and mortality surveys in their agencies.

Duration: 7 days

7. Sexual Reproductive Health

Participant of this course get an orientation to a holistic approach to sexual and reproductive health as part of the general health of people and development

The course is designed to enable learners to acquire knowledge and skills pertaining to community health and apply it to address community health issues and needs. It is aimed at developing competencies in health promotion, prevention and rehabilitation of individuals, families and the community, using the available resources.

11. Communicable Diseases

This course deals with the diagnosis, management, prevention and control of common communicable on tropical diseases.

12. Integrated HIV/AIDS Prevention, Care and Management

The objective of this course is to develop your knowledge, skills and attitudes with respect to the provision of comprehensive care to people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and their families.

13. Non Communicable Diseases

The course has 17-modules covering non-communicable diseases in adults.

Undergraduate Minimum Requirements
  • KCSE certificate with a Mean Grade of C+ and above or its equivalent, OR
  • A Diploma from an Accredited and Recognized Tertiary Institution with a minimum of a credit, OR
  • KCSE Mean Grade C (plain) or equivalent with a Post-Secondary Certificate and Diploma from a recognized institution, OR
  • KCE, East African Certificate of Education (EACE) “Ordinary Level” Division II or equivalent, plus a Post-Secondary Certificate and a Diploma from a recognized institution, OR
  • KACE “Advanced Level” with two Principal passes and a subsidiary, OR
  • Pre-University course as a qualification for university entrance
Post Graduate Requirements

For Master’s Degree, Postgraduate Diploma, or post-graduate certificate qualifications, you must present a certified copy of a recognized bachelor’s degree certificate with academic transcripts.
