Two local companies, BTI Millman Limited, and Dew CIS Solutions Limited, have partnered with Competa IT BV in the Hague, Netherlands, to form ‘CodePamoja’ training program to empower Kenyans with project management skills.
The program focuses on training Kenyan software developers on how to attain international standards using the latest project management methods and software tooling.
‘CodePamoja’ training which runs for a maximum of three months with a certificate upon completion complements the technical skills acquired from undergraduate level training with up-to-date project management experience and exposure to Enterprise Software Development.
Andy Haxby, the Director of Competa and founder of Fair Trade Software, said IT skills in Kenya are very good, but noted there was lack of adequate project management skills.
This is what is holding back IT not only in Kenya but also in East Africa. The purpose of having ‘CodePamoja’ is to enhance the foundation of Kenyan developers and build their capacity as skilled developers, added Andy.
Speaking Wednesday during a media briefing on the ‘CodePamoja’ Project at BIT Millman Offices, in Ngong, Nairobi, the Director said since ICT is a major pillar of Vision 2030 there is need to ensure that skilled people utilize the great opportunities that will emerge with the realization of Vision 2030.
He said developers who are conversant with the modern methods enjoy a competitive advantage and are able to secure projects in the market.
The Director further stated that the programme uses a system where Kenyan developers collaborate with developers in the Netherlands in virtual teams, with an emphasis on knowledge sharing.
Andy also announced that the training does not require a syllabus as trainees will learn by collaborating with developers in the EU on real projects.
Although the program targets ICT graduates, there are no stringent requirements to join ‘CodePamoja’.
The program is funded by Competa IT BV and German Development Agency Sequa therefore, trainees are not required to pay any fee.
Andy said currently the gender disparity among applicants for the program is low and urged ladies to also enroll.
