NATURAL WAYS TO LIGHTEN AND PREVENT DARK UNDERARMS

dark skin in the underarm area
Are dark underarms the reason you have stopped wearing your favorite sleeveless top or going out for a swim? There is always a solution to the problems we face in our day-to-day lives. However, before moving on to the various remedies that can help you reduce the discoloration of your underarms, let us understand the causes behind the problem. Very often, dead cells accumulate in the underarm area and cause darkness. These dead cells are a result of non-exposure of the skin in that area. A lot of us also use skin products that contain chemicals, of which we are unaware of. A common example is deodorants, the content of which tends to react with our skin, causing discoloration.

According to Dr. Deepali Bhardwaj, a renowned Dermatologist, "certain causes associated with underarm darkening include Friction Dermatitis, which leads to eczema, itching and skin pigmentation. Bleaching is another reason. Bleach has ammonia that can cause acid burns. Chronic bleaching of the underarms further increases skin pigmentation. Deodorants contain nitrium in them, which causes a change in the skin, invoking sweat allergies and so on. Darkening is also associated with genetic factors. Diabetes leads to skin darkening as well."

HERE ARE TIPS TO HELP PREVENT DARK UNDERARMS

LIGHTENED DARK UNDER ARMS
Moisturize: Use natural moisturizers like aloe vera, lecithin or coconut oil to moisturize the underarms at least 2 times a day.

Skip Deodorants: The chemicals present in deodorants darken underarms. Natural deodorants and antiperspirants that include coconut oil or rose water can be a better alternative.

Don’t Skip Showering: If the weather is hot, you should bathe more often. Neglecting bathing can lead to the accumulation of bacteria causing sweat and pigmentation. Mix a few drops of any citrus oil to your bathing water for a heavenly smell and to prevent dark discoloration under the skin.

Let the Skin Breathe: Avoid wearing tight clothes especially synthetic ones. Friction due to tight and synthetic clothes doesn’t let the skin breathe, they trap the sweat inside which gives rise to bacteria and leads to friction causing rashes. It is recommended to wear cotton or skin-friendly clothing. Make sure your clothing is loose enough to provide enough room for airflow.

Don’t let your weight go out of control: Fat can get accumulated under the arms, rub against the clothes and lead to dark discoloration under the arms.

Don’t compromise with basic hygiene: Regular exfoliation removes the accumulated dead skin cells that cause bumps and dark spots. Make sure to be gentle while exfoliating as the skin is very delicate under the arms. Harsh exfoliation can lead to scars and rashes.

Avoid Electrolysis: Using electrolysis for hair removal can lead to discoloration.
