Careers in Electrical and Electronics Engineering - Kenya

If you have curiosity to know about electricity and electronic equipments, it's application and would like to use the principles in building one of those sophisticated gadgets , then you could be future electronics or electrical engineer.

The job of electrical engineers applies to build, deploy, examine and supervision of electrical machines and tools for example power plant machinery, radar, electric motors and communication systems. Electrical Engineers also work in designing and development of aircraft, missile, rocketry, and other systems where electrical equipments make a part of such system.

Electronics Engineers are professionals who design and deploy communication equipments like satellite phone, radio, music player etc. Electronics Engineers also works in computer hardware designing, development, testing and manufacturing systems.

Difference between Electrical Engineer and Electronics Engineer

Electrical engineering and electronics engineering is sometimes used interchangeably. Due to some similarities between the electronics and electrical engineering fields like, they both require a person to apply science and math principles. However, there are huge differences between electrical engineering and electronics engineering. In layman's' language, the electrical engineers work with large amount of current to power structures and equipment such as- methods to generate power by wind turbines, solar energy systems whereas electronics engineers work with small amount of current, concentrate on manufacturing smaller equipment such as global positioning systems (GPS), cellular phones, MP3 players and DVD televisions.

Electrical and Electronics engineering degree programs taught through different universities across world. The course curriculum slightly varies in different institutions.  In United States this program is offered through Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and a BS degree or equivalent is awarded in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. There is as such no different study disciplines or degrees for electronics and engineering at the bachelor level.  Many universities across the world offer BS or Equivalent in Electrical Engineering and BS or Equivalent in Electronics Engineering as separate study discipline where a BS in Electrical Engineering or BS in Electronics Engineering is awarded.

Role of Electrical and Electronics Engineer

Electrical Engineers and Electronics Engineers work in industrial settings in electrical and electronics industries and related.

Electrical Engineers performs the following types of activities-

  • Comes up with new techniques related use of electrical equipments with improved efficiency
  • Cost estimation related material, make, labor, testing and installation of new electrical equipments
  • Makes sure that a product or equipment meets the standard guidelines
  • Checks on customers complaints and troubleshoots
  • Work in group with project team to ensure error free and timely delivery of a project

Electronics Engineers performs the following types of activities-

  • Design electronic components, software, products, or systems for commercial, industrial, medical, military, or scientific applications
  • Makes a system plan post analysis of electrical system requirements, cost, capacity and customer needs
  • Test systems and suggest for design changes or repair
  • Test electronics equipments for safety standards
  • Comes up with new techniques using electronics properties of material to build and improve electronics systems.

Personal Skills Required for Electrical and Electronics Engineers

Academic requirement: Academically you need minimum bachelor’s degree i.e. B.E/B.Tech/B.S or equivalent from a recognized institute to start career as a Electrical and Electronics engineer. The bachelor’s degree in engineering is a 4year program offered to those candidates who have completed K-12 standard of education with physics, chemistry and mathematics. Working with rigorous mathematical and computational formulae and understanding the rendezvous of tinniest particles are some necessary trait to enroll in a bachelor’s program in Electrical and Electronics engineering.

To join postgraduate degree programs like MS, M.Tech and Ph.D etc in Electrical and Electronics engineering disciplines universities ask for score in standardized test followed by essay test and personality interview. Minimum qualification to join masters level program and higher is graduate qualification in Electrical and Electronics engineering and related discipline.

Personal Skills

To be successful in career one needs to possess the following personality traits:

Analytical skill requirements- Electrical and Electronics Engineer must possess sound analytical skills to understand the working circumstances of the Electrical and Electronics systems.

Business Skills Requirements- Electrical and Electronics Engineer must be good in numbers to predetermine what a project will cost and how a company or government will benefit from it.

Critical Thinking Abilities- Electrical and Electronics Engineer must be able to think under what circumstances designs, materials and end product or project may fail and what should be alternative options in case of a failure so as to minimize losses. Electrical and Electronics Engineers work in highly sensitive environments where a small glitch may cost you a fortune within no time.

Team Worker- Electrical and Electronics Engineer works in team, he / she must need to be a good team worker; able to learn and make others learn in work environment.

Writing Skills- Electrical and Electronics Engineer works in a team with fellow engineers and other coworkers. They should have good writing and designing skills to present clear papers which other team workers could fully understand.
