Job Purpose

ACRE Africa is seeking a highly motivated Young Professional – GIS and Earth Observation to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will support the design and refinement of climate risk insurance products, with a particular focus on scouting and processing EO data to model and monitor climate conditions such as droughts, floods, and other weather-related risks, automate geospatial workflows.

This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career geospatial professional with strong technical skills and a passion for using data to enhance climate resilience in agriculture.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Supporting technical analysis of physical variables (including but not limited to rainfall, NDVI, Soil Moisture, Temperature) and coding of key algorithms in relevant language for Product development, as well as ground proofing of new products developed.
  • Researching and sourcing agriculture risk proxies, including weather data, agriculture production data, and hazard data.
  • Process and analyze satellite imagery and geospatial datasets using tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, ENVI, and ERDAS Imagine.
  • Develop and automate geospatial workflows using Python, R, and Google Earth Engine (GEE).
  • Prepare high-quality maps, visualizations, and spatial reports, technical client presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support development of data-driven insurance models, including early warning systems and risk indexing.
  • Support proposal writing and contribute to the development of technical reports and publications.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, contributing geospatial insights to research, monitoring, and evaluation efforts.

Minimum Requirements

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Geography, Geospatial Sciences, Environmental Science, Remote Sensing, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Proven skills in Python, R, and Google Earth Engine or other relevant programming language for geospatial analysis.
  • Proficiency in desktop GIS and remote sensing software: ArcGIS, QGIS, ENVI, ERDAS Imagine.
  • Experience working with satellite data and time-series indices (e.g., SMAP, MODIS, Sentinel, Landsat).
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to clean, transform, and interpret EO data.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex methodologies in clear, concise reports.
  • Demonstrated interest in agriculture, climate change, or environmental monitoring.
  • Self-starter with strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Experience with cloud-based platforms or geospatial APIs is an advantage.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and eager to learn.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
